Weight-gain reference — Approximately 300 calories above estimated maintenance.

How the Calorie Calculator Works

This calorie calculator estimates your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and daily calorie requirement using your age, sex, height, weight and physical activity level.

1

Enter Your Age

Enter your age in years. Age is one of the variables used by the BMR calculation.

2

Enter Your Measurements

Enter your height and weight using the available measurement units.

3

Select Activity

Select the activity level that best represents your normal physical activity.

BMR Calculation

The calculator uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation to estimate basal metabolic rate.

Mifflin–St Jeor equation:

Men: BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) + 5

Women: BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) − 161

Weight is measured in kilograms and height in centimeters.

Daily Calorie Requirement

After estimating BMR, the calculator applies an activity multiplier to estimate total daily energy expenditure. This provides an approximate maintenance calorie value.

Estimated maintenance calories

BMR × Activity Factor

Calorie Reference Values

The weight-loss and weight-gain values displayed by this calculator are simple reference calculations based on the estimated maintenance value. Individual energy needs can vary considerably.

Important Note

Calorie calculations are estimates and should not be treated as a medical diagnosis or personalized medical advice. Actual energy requirements can differ depending on factors such as body composition, health conditions, medications, exercise and daily activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a calorie calculator?
A calorie calculator estimates the amount of energy a person may need each day based on factors such as age, sex, height, weight and physical activity.
What is BMR?
BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. It estimates the energy your body uses at rest to support basic physiological functions.
What are maintenance calories?
Maintenance calories are an estimate of the amount of energy needed to maintain body weight at a particular activity level.
Which BMR equation does this calculator use?
This calculator uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation and then applies an activity multiplier to estimate daily calorie requirements.
Are the calorie results exact?
No. The results are estimates. Actual calorie requirements can vary between individuals because energy expenditure depends on many factors.
